A weekly newsletter monitoring key issues in the new media of Israel 30 July-2 August 2017

This issue covers the period 30 July-2 August 2017. Israeli online networks were preoccupied with a number of topics. These included the retrial of Elor Azaria, an Israeli soldier who extra-judicially killed Abdul Fattah al-Sharif in the Hebron city, allegedly because he had attempted to stab Israeli soldiers. Al-Sharif was wounded and lying on the ground.

This week, the Israeli military court rebutted an appeal submitted by Azaria. It confirmed a court decision rendered earlier on 21 February 2017 to sentence Azaria to 18 months in prison. The case stirred up online networks. In particular, right wing advocates, who incessantly showed solidarity, considered Azaria as a soldier who served in the national army and did what he did in defence of Israelis.
