A weekly newsletter monitoring key issues in the new media of Israel 28-31 March 2018

This issue of the Newsletter covers the period 28-31 March 2018. Israeli social media networks had divided opinions after 16 Palestinians had been killed during the Great March of Return in Gaza. While some Israeli bloggers launched an incitement campaign against Palestinians, others either commended the army, adopting an entirely indifferent attitude during the Passover. Some Israeli social media activists attacked the army.

Palestinian medical sources reported that 16 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,000 injured by the Israeli army during the protests, which were attended by thousands on the perimeter fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel on the anniversary of the Land Day.

In response to a call from Palestinian national factions and forces, tens of thousands of Gaza citizens participated in the Great March of Return. Protestors demanded that UN Resolution 194 on the return of refugees to their land be applied. They also demanded that the siege on Gaza be lifted.

The Great March of Return coincided with marking the anniversary of the Palestinian Land Day on 30 March.
