Approved in the first reading, a bill provides for preventing the activities of organisations that are against the army in the education system

Bill No. 3643/20/F

On Monday, 26 February 2018, the Knesset approved in the first reading a bill that provides for preventing associations and institutions, which Israel considers to be active against the Israeli army, from implementing non-curricular activities at Israeli schools. MK Shuli Mualem of the Jewish Home party took the initiative to propose this bill.

Background of the bill: The bill was motivated by activities of Breaking the Silence, an organisation established by reserve soldiers and officers following the Operation Defensive Shield of 2002. The organisation documents crimes, persecution and oppression committed by soldiers and settlers in the territory occupied in 1967. Particularly in the Greater Tel Aviv area, Jewish private schools host activists of Breaking the Silence to meet with students for the sake of listening to the other opinion.

In contrast with 23 MKs, a total of 35 MKs voted in favour of the bill.

 Voting Record

While 35 MKs were in favour, 23 MKs voted against the bill.
