Several key facts are highlighted by the prosecution of the Israeli soldier Elor Azaria, who killed Abdul Fattah al-Sharif, a Palestinian young man, in Hebron city on 24 March 2016. These facts have received a general consensus not only on the Israeli level. First and foremost, the prosecution featured an obligatory mock trial, which has nothing to do with or reflect the approach of the Israeli army or policies of successive Israeli governments and respective parties. The trial was necessitated by one fact only: Contrary to

many other similar, and far more serious, offence, this crime was documented by video. If it were not for this fact, Israel would have not been involved in this “whirlpool”, which uncovered other subsequent truths. Strenuous efforts have already been made in an attempt to erase and absent these truths. So far, the efforts made have been greatly successful. As various reports of active Israeli human rights organisations indicate, placing Azaria’s trial in its correct and natural context has, in effect, been a very rare exception.
